Priming Memory Systems

  • Definition

What separates priming from explicit memory is the instruction, not the cue: given the same three-letter word stems, people told to complete them with the first word that comes to mind show priming, while people told to recall studied words are using conscious recollection

  • Neural substrate

Patients with amnesia were impaired on free recall, cued recall and recognition but normal on word-stem completion priming, which declined at a normal rate over about two hours, so priming does not depend on the brain regions damaged in amnesia
