Non-Associative Learning Memory Systems

  • Definition

Sensitization is the strengthening of a response by strong or repeated stimulation; both it and habituation count as non-associative because they need only the stimulus itself, with no pairing of one event with another as in conditioning

  • Neural substrate

Sensitization works through serotonin released by facilitatory interneurons, which acts via cAMP/PKA and PKC signaling at the same sensory-motor synapse; long-term sensitization additionally needs CREB-regulated gene transcription and new protein synthesis
