Feeling of Knowing Metacognition

  • Definition

The feeling of knowing (FOK) is the judgment, made after failing to recall an answer, that the answer is nonetheless stored and would be picked out on a later recognition test; it was introduced with the recall–judgment–recognition procedure, in which people try to recall, rate their FOK, and then take a recognition test

  • Measured in AI

Not yet compared: no study found through September 2026 gives an AI the recall–judgment–recognition procedure (fail to produce an answer, rate whether it would be recognized, then take a recognition test), with or without a human baseline, so there are no AI results on the ability as psychologists measure it
